oh such fragile things and other imaginings

hello, i'm a graphic designer who really wish to be an astronaut in a flying submarine on a quest to find out if the stars above can be eaten, and if so, will they taste like animal crackers, especially the triceratops ones because they are super crunchy, with a hint of wasabi and salt? my mates and i fight wicked squids to collect treasures from the rough seas of internet and hide them here for safe keeping, so you should thank us :)

Nike MAG shoe (via Back 4 The Future)

Notes from the site:

In 1989, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield was asked to design a shoe for the second chapter in the Back to the Future series. He created the power-lacing, self-illuminating, Nike MAG. Riding on a pink hoverboard, Michael J. Fox made them the most famous shoe never made.

Over 15 years later in 2005, Tinker’s attention was caught by an online petition asking that the shoes come back. With no mold and nothing but an original prop shoe from the film, Tinker and footwear innovator Tiffany Beers began rebuilding the MAG from scratch. It would take six years, three restarts and many thousands of hours. But when it was all said and done, the shoe was a perfect replication of the original and the true predecessor to the 2015 power-lacing Nike MAG.

It would only make sense that the shoes be auctioned to benefit the foundation of the man who made them famous.

And with your help, the proceeds of these shoes will help erase Parkinson’s from existence.

David Bowie-inspired Children’s Book, Space Oddity, by Andrew Kolb

Notes from the author:

Have you ever listened to a song and your mind’s eye is immediately filled with visuals? David Bowie’s classic space epic is one such song for me. Every lyric paints such a vivid picture that I figured “Oh hey, I guess I’ll make that into a children’s book!” Yes, I talk like this. Note: There is no physical version of this…yet. If you like the book, spread the word and we’ll make this happen!

Ring Around A Tree, a Japanese kindergarten that circles around a mythic tree, by Yui and Takaharu Tezuka (via Inhabitat)
Notes from the site:
The perimeter of the cylindrical building is lined with classrooms and waiting areas, so that children can daydream while looking out the window and gazing at the old tree. The tree itself has a storied and inspirational history — it was almost uprooted during a typhoon, then it dried out from the subsequent trauma. It miraculously recovered from the damage, and became a favorite tree for local children to climb, long before the school was built. It’s truly a mythical tree to build a kindergarten around!

Paraffina (Alessilux x Forverlamp) by Frederic Gooris (via designboom)
Notes from the designer:
The use of oil lamps began thousands of years ago and for ages they were the only source of continuous light. This new ‘oil lamp is named after paraffin - once one of the most popular fuels - that the wick sucked up little by little from the tank through the principle of capillarity. Just like its predecessor, this new ‘paraffina’ is now equally efficient with its precious source of energy.
